# Overview of the Timer page

## This guide walks through every part of the Timer page in the Toggl web app — the timer bar, the three timer modes, and the four views you can switch between (Calendar, Split, Log history and Timesheet). It is for anyone who tracks time in Toggl, whatever your role or plan. By the end you will know what each control does, how to switch between logging time as it happens and logging it afterwards, and which article has the step-by-step for each way of tracking.

The Timer page is where you start and stop tracking time in Toggl. Open **Timer** in the sidebar, under **Track**. It is the first item in the sidebar for everyone except guests, and it is available on every plan, on the web, desktop and mobile apps. The sidebar label shows **Timer**; when a timer is running, it shows the elapsed time beside the label.

The page has two areas: the **timer bar** at the top, where you start, stop and edit a running timer, and the **views** below it, where you review and add time logs. Use the view switcher at the top right to switch between **Calendar**, **Split-view**, **List** and **Timesheet**.

### What’s on the page

| Element | What it shows or does | Learn more |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Timer bar** | Type a description, pick a project or task, set tags and billable status, and start or stop the timer. The bar stays at the top of the page in every view. | [Tracking time in Toggl](https://docs.toggl.com/time-tracking-in-toggl-2-0?hsLang=en) |
| **Timer modes** | Choose how the timer runs: **count up** (open-ended), **count down** (set a duration) or **Pomodoro** (focused intervals with breaks). Click the mode button next to the play button before you start. | [Pomodoro timer](https://docs.toggl.com/pomodoro-timer-in-toggl?hsLang=en) |
| **Log time mode** | Flip the switch beside the play button, or press **M**, to switch from a running timer to manual entry. Type a duration or set a start and stop time, then press **Enter**. | [Manual mode](https://docs.toggl.com/manual-mode?hsLang=en) |
| **Project or task picker** | Click **Project or task** in the timer bar, or type **+** or **@** in the description, to choose a project, task or subtask. Pinned projects appear first. | [How Toggl organises your work](https://docs.toggl.com/data-structure-and-categorization-guide-in-toggl-2.0?hsLang=en) |
| **Calendar view** | A grid of your logged and planned time. Choose Day, 3 Days, 5 Days or Week. Click an empty slot or drag across a range to add a time log. Connected Google or Outlook events show alongside your own time. | — |
| **Split view** | The calendar with a side panel showing logged and planned time for the selected day, so you can review and edit without switching views. | — |
| **Log history** | A list of your past time logs. Open the three-dot menu on any entry to continue it, edit it or delete it. | — |
| **Timesheet view** | A grid with tasks in rows and days in columns. Type hours into cells to log time quickly. Group by task, project, client or client and project. If your team uses timesheet approvals, the grid shows the approval period: a week, or the whole calendar month on a monthly setup. | [Using the Timesheet view](https://docs.toggl.com/using-the-timesheet-view?hsLang=en) |
| **Date picker** | Move between days or weeks. The Week view starts on the day set in Start week on. The 5 Days view shows your work week: Monday to Friday, or Sunday to Thursday if your working hours run Sunday to Thursday. The Timesheet view follows the Calendar view's day count. If your team uses timesheet approvals, it moves one approval period at a time instead, either a week or a month. | — |
| **Goals widget** | Personal, recurring time targets — for example “at least 5 hours of billable work a day”. Shows your progress from matching time logs. Up to 4 active goals. | [Goals in Toggl](https://docs.toggl.com/goals-in-toggl-2.0?hsLang=en) |

### What you can do here

- **Start a timer** — type a description, pick a project or task, click play. Add or change the project, task, tags and billable status while it runs or after you stop it.
- **Log time you forgot to track** — switch to Log time mode, type a duration or set start and stop times.
- **Add time from the calendar** — click an empty slot or drag across a range.
- **Repeat an earlier entry** — in Log history, open the three-dot menu and choose **Continue**.
- **Turn planned time into logged time** — open a planned entry and select **Log time**.
- **Fill in a timesheet** — switch to the Timesheet view and type hours into the grid. On a timesheet approval setup the grid covers your approval week or month, and you submit it from there.
- **Track from a task** — open any task and click the play button inside it to start a timer linked to that task.
- **Set a goal** — add a personal time target in the Goals widget and watch it fill as you track.

### Who can do what

The Timer page is available to everyone except guests. What you can see and do depends on your role and your plan.

| Action | Who can do it |
| --- | --- |
| Start, stop and edit your own timers | All members and time trackers |
| See other people’s time logs in Log history | Admins, team leads and project managers (for their team or projects) |
| Use the Timesheet view | All members and time trackers |
| Submit a timesheet for approval | All members, on plans with approvals enabled (Premium and Enterprise) |
| Set personal goals | All members and time trackers |

On Premium workspaces, admins can make fields required — project, task, description or tags — on time logs and tasks. A time log on a tagged task already meets the tags requirement. See [Required fields for tasks and time logs](https://docs.toggl.com/required-fields-for-tasks-and-time-logs?hsLang=en).

### Common questions

#### What’s the difference between Calendar and Split view?

Calendar shows your time on a full-width grid. Split view shows the same calendar with a side panel for the selected day, so you can review and edit one day’s entries without leaving the calendar.

#### Why does 5 Days show Monday to Friday when my week starts on Sunday?

The 5 Days view takes its days from your working hours, not from Start week on. To see Sunday to Thursday, set a custom schedule with hours on Sunday to Thursday and leave Friday and Saturday empty. See Availability settings.

#### Can I see my team’s time on the Timer page?

No. The Timer page shows your own time. To see other people’s time, open **Reports** in the sidebar. Team leads see their team’s time, project managers see their projects’ time, and admins see everyone’s. See Overview of the Reports page.

#### Why can’t I see the Timesheet view?

The Timesheet view is one of the four view switches at the top right of the Timer page. If you can’t see it, your workspace may have a different default layout. Click the table icon in the view switcher. If it’s still missing, ask your admin whether your role includes time tracking.

#### How do I track time against a task that has no project?

Tasks without a project are listed under **No project** in the project or task picker. Select the task the same way as any other.

#### Do timers sync across the web, desktop and mobile apps?

Yes. All three apps use your Toggl account, so a timer you start on one is visible and controllable on the others.
