Split a time log in Toggl

Split an existing time log into two parts in the Toggl web app, including where to find Split, plan availability, and when the action is unavailable.

Split an existing time log into two parts without re-entering its details. Split time log is available in the Toggl web app on Starter, Premium, and Enterprise plans.

Split a time log

1. Open Timer in the sidebar.

2. Find the logged time you want to split. You can use any of these entry points:

  • In List, open the time log's three-dot menu.

  • In Calendar, open the time log and then its three-dot menu, or right-click the time log.

  • For a running timer, open the three-dot menu in the timer bar.

3. Select Split.

4. Drag the divider to the time where you want the second time log to begin. The divider moves in five-minute steps. You can also use the arrow keys.

5. Select Split to confirm.

The first part becomes a new time log. The original time log keeps the second part, including its description, project or task, tags, and billable status. If you split a running timer, the second part keeps running from the split point.

When Split is unavailable

You cannot split:

  • A time log shorter than 10 minutes.

  • Planned time that has not been logged.

  • A time log locked in a submitted or approved timesheet.

  • A time log that is missing a field your workspace requires for new time logs.

If Split is locked with an upgrade message, the workspace plan does not include it. Split time log is available on Starter and higher plans.

Split view and Split time log are different

Split view shows planned and logged time side by side on the Timer page. **Split time log** divides one logged time record into two records.

Common questions

Does splitting change the total logged time? No. The two resulting time logs add up to the same duration as the original.

Can I split a running timer? Yes. The first part is saved as a completed time log, and the second part keeps running from the split point.

Why can't I choose any minute as the split point? The divider moves in five-minute steps, and each resulting time log must be at least five minutes long.
