# Task not showing on the Timeline
## This guide is for anyone who has created or been assigned a task and can't find it on the Timeline. It lists the reasons a task is hidden, from missing dates to filters, grouping, privacy and repeating tasks, in the order worth checking them. You'll be able to find the cause and get the task back on the Timeline.
A task appears on the Timeline only when it has both a start date and an end date, those dates fall inside the period you're looking at, and nothing in your current view hides it. The most common cause is a missing date: a task with no dates waits in the **Unplanned tasks** panel instead. Work through the checklist below in order.
### Checklist

| 1 | **Does the task have both a start and an end date?** | Open the task and look at **Start date** and **End date**. On the Timeline, open the side panel to see **Unplanned tasks**. | Add both dates, or drag the task from **Unplanned tasks** onto a lane and date. A task with only one date doesn't appear. |
| 2 | **Are you looking at the right dates?** | Check the date headers. Select **Today** if it's showing, or change the zoom between **Days**, **Weeks**, **Months**, **Quarters** and **Years**. | Scroll or zoom to the task's dates. A task shows if any part of it falls inside the visible period. |
| 3 | **Is a filter or saved view hiding it?** | Look at the **Filters** control and the view picker at the top left. | Clear the filters, or close the applied saved view with **×**. Filters by member, team, member tag, project, client, status, priority, tag, privacy and custom fields can all hide a task. If you can't manage teams, you can only filter by teams you're in. | 6 | **Is the task in a Draft project?** | Open the project and look for the **Draft** label. | Draft projects are hidden from the Timeline unless **Show drafts** is on in the display preferences (cog icon). | 7 | **Is the task private, or in a private project you can't access?** | Ask the task's creator or a workspace admin whether it's private. | New projects and tasks without a project follow the workspace's **Default visibility** in Admin settings. In workspaces that use Private, they're private unless someone shares them. Private tasks without a project are visible to the people who created them or are assigned to them. Tasks in a private project are hidden from people who don't have access to that project. Ask an admin to add you to the project. |
### How grouping changes where a task appears
The Timeline shows the same tasks in four different ways. A task can be on the Timeline but not where you're looking.
| Group by | Where the task appears | Why it might look missing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **People** (default) | In the lane of each person it's assigned to. Tasks with no assignee sit in the **No assignee** row. | Filtering by member, team or member tag can hide the **No assignee** row, so unassigned tasks disappear. |
| **Projects** | In its project's group. Tasks with no project sit in **No project**. | The project group is collapsed. Expand it. Up to 25 project groups can be expanded at once, so collapse one to open another. Grouping by Projects needs Starter or above. |
| **Tags** | In the lane of each tag it has. | A task with no tag doesn't appear in this grouping. Switch to **People** or **Projects**. Grouping by Tags needs Starter or above. |
| **Teams** | In the group of the team its assignee belongs to. | Needs the Capacity Management add-on. If you can't manage teams, you only see the teams you're in. Inside a project, the **Timeline** tab offers **People** and **Tags**, and **Teams** with the add-on. It has no **Projects** grouping because the view is already limited to that project. Guests can open the Timeline tab of projects they're invited to, read-only.
### Common questions
#### The task has dates but it's still in Unplanned tasks
Check that it has both dates. A task with only a start date or only an end date counts as unplanned. Open the task and fill in the missing one.
#### I scheduled the task but it disappeared when I changed the grouping
Your filters stay applied when you switch grouping, but each grouping puts tasks in different lanes. In **Tags**, a task with no tag is left out. In **Projects**, the project group may be collapsed. Switch back to **People** to see every assigned task.
#### A teammate sees the task but I don't
Compare your filters and saved view first. Then check privacy: if the task or its project is private, only people with access see it. #### The task shows, but it doesn't change anyone's capacity
Capacity counts a task only when it has a start date, an end date and an assignee, and it isn't archived or deleted. Tasks with no estimate add zero hours. See [How capacity is calculated](https://docs.toggl.com/how-capacity-is-calculated?hsLang=en).
#### I completed the task. Will it leave the Timeline?
No. Completing a task doesn't remove it from the Timeline. Remove its dates to send it back to **Unplanned tasks**: right-click the task and choose **Remove dates**.
