Which Toggl app should I use?
This guide is for anyone who tracks time in Toggl and isn't sure which app to install. It compares the web, desktop, mobile and browser extension apps side by side, including what's new on desktop and mobile, and shows what each can and can't do. After reading, you'll know which app to use for each situation and where to download it.
Use the web app for everything, and add the other apps for the situations they are built for. The desktop app suits tracking all day on a computer, the mobile app suits tracking on the go, and the browser extension suits tracking inside tools like Jira, GitHub and Notion. All four use the same Toggl account and the same data, so a time log started in one app shows up in the others.

The desktop app is the web app in a native window, so it includes everything the web app does, plus the desktop-only features in the table. The browser extension is a timer, a list of recent time logs and a calendar view. Anything else opens in the web app.
In the extension's list, you can switch a time log between billable and non-billable. Time logs in a submitted or approved timesheet period are locked.
Web app
The web app is the full product. Admin and management work happens here, such as Reports, Members, Approvals, Capacity, Admin settings and billing. Sign in at the Toggl web address with your Toggl account. For a tour of every page, see Tour of the Toggl web app.
Desktop app
The desktop app is for Mac (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows 11. On macOS it needs Ventura 13.5 or later. New installs open automatically when you log in to your computer. To stop this, turn off Open Toggl at login in your profile settings under Desktop.
It adds:
- Quick timer actions from the Windows taskbar or the Mac dock and menu bar.
- Global shortcuts that work even when Toggl is in the background.
- Auto-Tracker, which starts and stops timers from the app or window you're using, using rules you set.
- Reminders when no timer is running, and idle detection.
- My activity, a private timeline of the apps, websites and calls on your computer. Toggl names each block, suggests time logs for it, and can draft your whole day with Auto-log day. A Week overview shows where your time went. Window titles never leave your computer.
- A mini timer that floats above your other windows. Show or hide it from the timer's more options menu.
- On Mac, Cmd+Q closes the window but keeps Toggl running in the menu bar. Choose Open Toggl from the menu bar to bring it back, or Quit to close Toggl completely.
Without an internet connection, the desktop app keeps showing your last running timer but turns off the start, stop and continue actions until you're back online. An offline banner shows in the app window, and time logs that haven't reached Toggl yet are marked Not synced until they do. Offline tracking in the desktop app is in Beta, and only some accounts see it.
See Toggl Desktop App and Activity Timeline.
Mobile app
The mobile app for iOS and Android has four tabs: Timer, Calendar, Tasks and Reports. The Reports tab appears only if your access level can view reports. Timer has a List mode and a Pomodoro mode. If you belong to more than one workspace, switch between them from the Timer header. The Count-down timer mode stays on the web.
Projects, Clients and Tags: Open these pages under Settings → Workspace to search active, completed and archived items. Depending on your access level, you can create and edit them; archive, unarchive or delete them; complete or reopen projects; and restore a recent change with Undo.
These stay on the web: Timeline, Board, Approvals, Time off, Capacity, Goals, Members, the audit log, the full Projects page, other report types, export, saved views and shared reports, full workspace administration, and billing.
Log in with QR code lets you sign in on your phone by scanning a code from your browser. In Download apps, choose Mobile, then Sign in on your phone. See Toggl Mobile App and Log in with QR code.
Browser extension
The extension adds a Toggl timer next to your address bar and a Track time button inside supported tools. It supports Asana, Backlog, ClickUp, GitHub, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, HubSpot, Jira, Notion, Odoo, Slack, Todoist, Trello and Zendesk. For a tool that isn't listed, you can define your own mapping. Starting a timer from a ticket or issue can fill in the task, project and tags for you, within the limits your admins set. The Jira integration needs the Premium plan or higher.
The extension can also record the sites you visit in the background and show that activity in its calendar view. Your activity stays on your device.
The extension works in Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, such as Edge.

Download the apps
- In the web app, select Download apps at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Choose Desktop app, Browser extension or Mobile.
- For the desktop app, pick Get Toggl for Mac, Get Toggl for Windows, or Get the Intel version for Intel Macs.
- For the browser extension, pick Add to Chrome or the other browser it offers.
- For mobile, scan the code with your phone, or select Open the download page.
- Sign in with the same Toggl account you use on the web.
Apps you already have are listed under On your devices and marked Installed. Their Download or Open in store links stay available, so you can reinstall or set up another device.
The apps are available on every plan. What you see inside them depends on your access level and plan, the same as on the web. See Why can't I see a page or feature?.
Common questions
Do my time logs sync between apps?
Yes. They all use the same account. On mobile, a timer you start or stop while offline syncs when you're back online. In the web and desktop apps, a banner tells you when you're offline, and a time log that hasn't synced yet is marked Not synced until it reaches Toggl. Keep the tab open until the marker clears; your browser warns you if you try to close it before then. The browser extension stays in sync with the web app in real time.
Why can't I find Timeline, Approvals or Members on my phone?
Those pages are web and desktop only. Open the web app in a browser to use them.
I installed an app called Toggl Track. Is that the right one?
Toggl Track is a separate product. If your account is on Toggl, search for Toggl in the app store, or use Download apps in the web app to get the right link. If you sign in to Toggl Track with a Toggl account, the app can point you to the correct app.
Which app should I use for meetings and calendar events?
Connect your Google or Outlook calendar in the web app. You can then log time against calendar events from the web, desktop and mobile calendars.
Does the desktop app work offline?
Partly. You can see your last running entry, but start, stop and continue are turned off until the connection returns. Use the mobile app if you need to start and stop a timer offline. Offline tracking in the desktop app is in Beta: only some accounts see it, and with it on you can keep tracking time while offline.
